A Newbuild Sheffield Passivhaus

In the South-West of Sheffield, one of our latest projects transforms a former garden into a family sanctuary that embodies our clients’ lifelong dream of self-building a sustainable home. The clients, passionate about creating a space that genuinely reflects their commitment to eco-friendly living, envisioned a compact yet comfortable retreat that complies with Passivhaus standards. Their ambition was not merely to build a house, but to create an intimate environment that perfectly aligns with their values and lifestyle.

With energy efficiency and low impact at the heart of their brief, every design decision was made to ensure the home remains both economical and sustainable. The result is a carefully planned three-bedroom dwelling that maximises space while minimising energy use. Upon entering, residents are greeted by a full-height entrance hall, complete with a striking feature staircase that leads to a cosy loft space. This snug area is designed to offer both warmth and breathtaking views over the rooftops towards the scenic hills of the Peak District.

At the rear of the ground floor, the living area opens out onto mature gardens where much of the original planting has been preserved to retain the site’s natural charm. A winding path from the house leads to a former coach house, now repurposed as ancillary space, thus reinforcing the delicate balance between innovative design and historical context.

Designed to meet stringent Passivhaus criteria, the house is conceived as a super-insulated, airtight sanctuary constructed using a pre-fabricated timber frame. A state-of-the-art mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery ensures a continuous flow of fresh air, while renewable technologies—including an air source heat pump for heating and hot water and photovoltaic panels integrated into the roofscape—underscore the home’s commitment to sustainable living.

The proposal has recently been submitted for planning approval, marking a significant milestone in the realisation of our clients’ vision. This project not only underscores our firm’s passion for environmentally responsible design but also reflects our belief in a collaborative, attentive approach that informs every aspect of our work.
