A Scandinavian‑Inspired Timber Extension for a Family Home
Rupert Road began with a desire to bring warmth, clarity and a touch of Scandinavian simplicity to a much‑loved family home. The new timber‑framed extension is clad in vertical board‑on‑board cedar, its rhythm softened by a crafted privacy screen that filters light into the ground‑floor playroom. Horizontal aluminium bands break the verticality, aligning openings at the front and back to give the elevation a calm, ordered feel.
The Scandinavian influence runs through the design: natural materials, clean lines, and a focus on light, comfort and everyday practicality. The existing house is wrapped in insulated render to improve thermal performance, while a brick plinth ties old and new together and forms a welcoming entrance from Rupert Road.
What makes this project especially memorable is the way it has been received. The extension has become a quiet landmark in the neighbourhood — admired, discussed and warmly welcomed. As the clients shared:
From the client: “We were a bit worried about how the neighbours would receive our extension. But we needn’t have worried. The response we have got has been consistently positive and for the first couple of months, we couldn’t leave the house without someone commenting, asking questions or complimenting us on the extension. It has certainly been a talking point in the area.”
