Living Among the Trees: A House in the Woods

Set deep within mature woodland, this project began with a rare opportunity: to create a contemporary home that sits quietly among the trees while responding to the steep contours of the site. The design grew from the landscape itself, shaped by the desire to live with the woodland rather than impose upon it.

The house is formed from two distinct elements. A protective stone volume cuts across the slope, lifting the bedroom windows to look directly into the tree canopies. Alongside it, a brick form follows the natural contours, opening the living spaces to long views across the site and drawing in shifting woodland light throughout the day. Between these two forms, a glass and timber entrance link appears to hover above the ground, offering a moment of calm transition as you step into the home.

Every decision was guided by the sensitivity of the setting. The architecture settles into the woodland with restraint and clarity, allowing the landscape to remain the defining presence.

From the client: “Obtaining planning permission on such an environmentally sensitive site is a testament to the professionalism and attention to detail provided by thread architects. They have produced a unique design that sits perfectly in the woodland setting.”
