A Self‑Built SIPS Extension Transforming a Family Home

The Hall Green project began with a challenge familiar to many suburban homes: a beautiful, mature garden overshadowed by the blank side wall of a neighbour’s extension. Rather than accept this as a permanent constraint, the owners saw an opportunity to reshape their home around light, outlook and family life.

The new extension builds out alongside the neighbouring wall, turning what was once an eyesore into the backdrop for a generous open‑plan living, dining and kitchen space. Large windows and sliding doors open the house to the garden, creating a bright, sociable heart for the family. Wrapping the extension around the side of the house allowed space for a dedicated utility and storage area, bringing order and practicality to everyday routines.

What makes this project especially distinctive is the way it was built. The owners undertook the entire construction themselves, using SIPS panels for the walls and roof to create a highly insulated, efficient structure. A brick exterior and carefully chosen windows and doors complete the design, giving the extension a sense of permanence and quality.

The result is a warm, generous family space shaped by determination, craft and a clear vision of how the home could evolve.
