From Workshop to Warm Home

Anya and Joe had spent months searching for a home in Sheffield that felt right, but nothing matched their needs or their budget. Instead of compromising, they took a leap and bought an old joiner’s workshop, a raw, unpolished space with potential hidden beneath years of dust and timber offcuts.

Working to a tight budget and determined to shape the project with their own hands, they set about transforming the workshop into a place they could call home. Together we reimagined the building as a warm, generous three‑bedroom house, centred around a light‑filled open‑plan living, dining and kitchen space. A separate utility room brings order to the everyday, while the original character of the workshop is woven quietly through the new layout.

What began as a disused workspace is now a home full of personality, craft and care, a testament to Anya and Joe’s vision and determination. The project went on to receive both the Conservation Award and the Residential Award at the Sheffield Design Awards in 2016, recognising the sensitivity and ambition behind the conversion.
